1. Tip & Tax

Both tip and tax are percentages of the subtotal (the pre-tax, pre-tip food and drink total):

Grand Total = Subtotal + (Subtotal × Tip%) + (Subtotal × Tax%)

2. Uneven Shares

Instead of splitting evenly, each person is assigned a number of shares. Everyone's cost is proportional to their shares:

Person's Cost = Grand Total × (Person's Shares ÷ Total Shares)

If everyone has 1 share, this is just an even split. Give a big eater 2 shares, or a kid 0.5 shares, for a fair uneven split. Tip and tax are shared in the same proportion.

3. Who Owes Whom

Mark who actually paid the bill at the restaurant. The tool compares what each person paid against what they owe, then computes the minimum set of transfers so that everyone ends up square. Debtors (people who owe money) are matched to creditors (people who covered more than their share) greedily by amount.
